Chapter 15. Our Environment

Our Environment

* All the interacting organisms in an area together with the non-living constituents of
the environment form an ecosystem.
* Organisms in the ecosystem are classified into three groups – Producers, Consumers and Decomposers.
* Organisms that make their food from inorganic substances are known as producers.
* Organisms that consume the food produced, either directly from producers or indirectly by feeding on other consumers, are known as consumers.
* Microorganisms that break down the dead remains of organisms, that are used by other members of the ecosystem are known as decomposers.
* The flow of energy from one species to the other taking part at various biotic levels forms a food chain.
* A food web is an extension of a food chain where a simple linear path is interchanged to a complex network of interactions.
